Is divorce on the table? Are one or both of you questioning your commitment to stay married, or unsure if you have the motivation to work hard in marriage counseling? Discernment Counseling is a research-based special consultation for ambivalent couples. It is brief—1 to 5 sessions—where partners are met with individually, except to give a brief summary to the partner.
Unlike couples therapy, it doesn’t ask you to change right now, but instead to better understand what’s happened to the marriage and each person’s contributions to the problems. The goal is to increase clarity and confidence in deciding to (1) remain in place for a reason/season, (2) separate with growth and resources, or (3) each undertake identified issues for personal growth in 6 months of full-on couples therapy, at which time each person can consider their commitment to their marriage.
